Similar to neighboring Gloucester, Rockport is a small community where New England charm meets majestic ocean views. Located at the easternmost point of Cape Ann and surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean, Rockport offers amazing ocean views. It was founded in 1623 as part of Gloucester and offers residents a rich history. Originally the land was used as a source for timber for nearby shipwrights and later became a source for granite throughout much of the Eastern United States. During the Great Depression when demand for expensive granite waned in favor of affordable concrete the community of Rockport reinvented itself as an artists colony.
The Rockport Art Association and the North Shore Art Association, founded in 1921 and 1922 respectively, are two of the oldest art organizations in the country.
